Remembering Mar Elepaño
by Sheila Sofian
Mariano “Mar” Elepaño, was a beloved staff member of the USC School of Cinematic Arts community. For over three decades, Mar served not only as a dedicated educator and production supervisor in the John C. Hench Division of Animation & Digital Arts, but also as a mentor, artist, and friend to generations of students. He had a passion for nurturing talent and assisting students in every step of their film productions.
Mar was more than a teacher and staff member; he was a believer in people. He saw potential in everyone. He nurtured countless artists with care, humility, and deep respect, always encouraging experimentation, self-expression, and truth in one’s work. He would introduce himself to classes by saying “I love you!” And he meant it. Many students have shared how Mar’s mentorship helped guide them in their art and their personal lives.
His legacy lives on in the films, the friendships, and the hearts he helped shape. Mar’s warmth, his laughter, and his quiet presence will be missed more than words can express. To those who knew and loved him; students, alumni, faculty, and staff, please know that you are not alone in mourning. We will always remember all that Mar gave to us.
