MESSAGE from the DEAN

Welcome to another issue of In Motion magazine. As is always the case, the stories celebrate the creative brilliance of our alumni, as well as some of the great work happening within the walls of SCA. They include a profile of our Office of Industry Relations which connects students to internships, distributes students’ projects to festivals and screens worldwide, and helps graduates find their first professional jobs. This year, IR’s First Jobs program celebrated its 1000th placement of a recent alumnus in their first industry job! We were so proud we celebrated with a party!

You’ll read about Marisa Torelli-Pedevska, who co-founded The Inevitable Foundation while she was still a student in the Wells Writing Division, to fund and mentor professional screenwriters who are living with disabilities. Also profiled are producer John Palmer, who spent the pandemic helping Sean Penn get both a movie (Flag Day) and a non-profit (CORE) off the ground; and director Katrelle Kindred, who gives us an inside look at what it means to be an in-demand television director (lots of hotel room stays!).

We celebrate ten years of the American Film Showcase, our partnership with the U.S. State Department that takes independent American films to audiences around the world. And the launch of the Jerry Lawson Fund, which aims to make an education (and career) in game design accessible to underrepresented creators.

I hope you will take some time to read all the articles. And that they will inspire you to make time to connect with us. If you’re an alumnus, we look forward to welcoming you back to campus for an event, or just a visit. Please be sure to update your information at SCA Community.

Everyone is welcome to visit SCA for screenings, summer classes, and other public events. You can also connect on social media @USCCinema. Or email us at communications@cinema.usc.edu.

We are available on a screen, wherever you are.
